Healthier Cinnamon Rolls with Greek Yogurt, Bananas, and Whole Wheat

Just a Dietitian out here finding some nutritious ingredient swaps so we can eat cinnamon rolls everyday 🤣

But for REAL. My 5 year old has a few foods he loves and cinnamon rolls are one of them so I am on a mission to meet his nutrient needs with the foods he loves and this has what motivated me to create this recipe.

This recipe can be used for feeding babies, would recommend avoiding the frosting for them 🤍

Don’t get me wrong, I love a good classic cinnamon roll too! But when our goal is to find less sugar and saturated fat, and maybe a bit more protein these hit the spot!

Ingredients:
(Makes about 12 rolls)
Dough:
3 1/2 cup whole wheat flour (you can sub AP flour for a less dense version)
2 Tbsp baking POWDER
2 Tsp salt
2 1/2 cups 2% Greek yogurt

Filling:
2 ripe large bananas
1 tsp ground cinnamon
1/2 tsp vanilla extract

Icing:
1 cup powder sugar
1.5 tbsp milk

Directions: Preheat oven to 350F. In a large bowl (or stand mixer with dough attachment) mix together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Add in Greek yogurt and combine until dough forms (feel free to add a little milk if needed to make it easier to form a dough). On a floured surface roll out dough into a rectangle shape. In a bowl mash together bananas, cinnamon, and vanilla extract and blend well. Place banana mixture onto dough and spread across the dough. Roll dough into one long roll. Cut into 12 rolls. Place in a greased baking dish. Mix one egg with 2 tbsp water and brush egg wash over top. Bake in the over for 30-40 minutes until browned on top. While the rolls cool, mix together the powder sugar and milk and drizzle over top. Enjoy!
